Alan Saunders: What about his interest in the visual arts? Because as well as liking Cézanne, he was interested in more modern figures; he was also quite interested in Paul Klee, wasn’t he?

Taylor Carman: Yes, that’s right. He was very interested in modern art, and partly he was interested in painting, because of its connections with perception, and so there are many ways in which our perceptual experience affects the way we see paintings, and vice-versa: the way we think about paintings feeds back into the way we think about our own perceptual experience. And sometimes in misleading ways. We think that in perception we’re presented with pictures, that’s been the traditional conception of perception: sort of pictures before our minds. So he was interested in saying ‘That’s not at all what perception is like. We’re not presented with pictures, we’re presented with the world.’ And so when we make pictures, we’re really doing something very interesting and original and unique: we’re not just reproducing our perceptual experience, we’re doing something altogether different. He was interested in Cezanne because Cezanne broke out of traditional perspective, and started painting things the way they looked to somebody who’s an embodied agent in the world and not a kind of detached observer.

But, as you say, he was interested in Paul Klee and many other modern artists, in part because he was interested in combating a conception of modern art, that it was a sort of retreat from the world into a kind of private subjective experience, and he wanted to insist that artists like Klee were still just as much showing us features of the world through their paintings, and not just returning us to a kind of inner private experience, very much sort of showing us aspects of art grappling with the world that we’re in. And that traditional geometrical perspective was not the uniquely correct way of doing that: there’s lots of ways of doing it.

Ikke desto mindre synes samtidsbegrepet i seg selv å forutsette tanken om en målestokk. Men hva slags? Mest utbredt er ”samtid-” som prefiks innenfor deler av kulturlivet: ”samtidskunst”, ”samtidslitteratur”, ”samtidsmusikk” etc. Men hva er det de beskriver?

Bill Readings, until his death a Canadian professor of comparative literature at the Université de Montréal, in his book of 1997 The University in Ruins (published posthumously), observes that universities no longer are “guardians of the national culture” but effectively empty institutions that sell an abstract notion of excellence.26 The university, Readings writes, is “an autonomous bureaucratic corporation” aimed at educating for “economic management” rather than “cultural conflict.” The Anglo-American urban geographer David Harvey, reviewing Readings’s book in the Atlantic Monthly, noted that the modern university “no longer cares about values, specific ideologies, or even such mundane matters as learning how to think. It is simply a market for the production, exchange, and consumption of useful information—useful, that is, to corporations, governments, and their prospective employees.”27 In considering the “production of subjectivity” in this context, Readings writes—citing the Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben—that this has become no longer either shop-floor obedience or managerial rationality but the much touted “flexibility,” “personal responsibility,” “communication skills,” and other similarly “abstract images of affliction.”

Et interessant og viktig spørsmål også for formgivning, kunst og håndverk … arkitektur, design og teknologi.

Godt nyttår kjære lesere av VISKULT!

Vi starter det nye året med litt selvpromotering.

Venke Aure, en av grunnleggerne av Viskult!.net, har blitt intervjuet av HiO-nytt i anledning utgivelsen av boken “Konsten som läranderesurs. Syn på lärande, pedagogiska strategier och social inklusion på nordiska konstmuseer”, som hun har skrevet sammen med Helene Illeris og Hans Örtegren.

Intervjuet ligger ute i sin helhet på HiO-nytt. Her forteller hun om sitt syn på kunstformidling, om det å utvikle teori i forhold til kunsformidlingsfeltet, og om hennes virke som forfatter av åtte bøker og en rekke artikler.

Som doktorgradsstipendiat arbeidde ho både ved Høgskulen i Oslo og Høgskulen i Volda. Ho er ein aktiv deltakar i forskarnettverket DesignDialog.
